Best Solo Travel Destinations Around The World

Whether you want to have the freedom to change your itinerary on a whim, or if you just want to embrace being single and adventurous, there’s always a new place for solo exploration. Here are some of the most exciting and rewarding destinations to check out when you are travelling alone.

Hawaii

It might be an unexpected choice but this tropical paradise is perfect for those who are adventuring solo. You can explore the tidepools, visit with the seals and check out the scenic waterfalls, all while munching on Hawaii’s delicious native macadamia nuts. There are surf camps designed specifically for solo female travellers too – wonderful if you want to learn a new skill and be supported along the way.

Japan

Famously courteous and organized, Japanese culture is perfect for the solo traveller. With its embrace of technology – and restaurants specifically catering for single diners – Japan is easy to navigate. Capsule hotels are another way that this culture embraces those travelling alone, and everything is either ‘kawaii’ cute or embraces clean and stylish lines. There are so many things to do; try a bullet train to Kyoto, explore the manicured gardens and teahouses, or visit the hot springs in Hakone for a visit you’ll never forget.

Costa Rica

Another spot where you can learn to surf, relax on white beaches or just explore the wild jungles with a guided group, Costa Rica famously disbanded its army and put that money towards girls’ education. It boasts high levels of wellbeing, life expectancy is long and it’s is one of Central America’s safest countries – they’re clearly getting things right. Go whitewater rafting, then check out the volcanic national parks and take in the local wildlife – see if you can spot delightful local creatures like sloths and toucans.

Canada

There are so many scenic reasons to visit Canada, that it seems almost unnecessary to mention the low crime rate, which adds to the safety and appeal of this North American country. You can visit the foodie cities of Montreal and Vancouver or stick to the national parks and road-trip. Canadians are famously friendly and will delight in sharing their country with you.

Ireland

If you’re looking for another warm welcome, then the Irish know how to do it! Explore the cities, or get lost in the luscious green countryside. Dublin is a must-see if you like literary tours, want to visit authentic pubs with traditional Irish folk music, and sip Guinness, while having conversations that captivate you with merry charm. Ireland is beautiful and safe – you’ll meet other travellers from around the world everywhere you go and make new friends easily.

Portugal

There is so much on offer in Portugal, from the sun-soaked beaches of the Algarve to the thousands of years of history and architecture to be found in Lisbon. Portugal is the perfect place to travel alone and enjoy the generous local hospitality, as well as shop for linens, handicrafts and pottery that you will treasure forever. Visit castles, try the gorgeous pastel de nata pastries, and if you have time, hop on over to the picture-perfect Azores – exotic Eden-like islands, featuring the Lake of Fire.
